So you wanna hear more about me..? Great! I’m a career art director and creative director, initially trained at Art Center, then several years working long hours with SF-based agencies like McCann, FCB, Maiden Lane. Originally hailing from New York and thinking about marketing as a career path, I saw a friend’s advertising portfolio and moved out to CA to attend art school: “That’s it. That’s what I wanna do”, I remember feeling.
What’s interesting is that branding is a combination of business, storytelling and emotion. Everyone needs a good story: voters need a story, religious folks need a story, and businesses need one too. A genuine, honest backstory can transform any business into a trustworthy friend. And that is what fascinates me about branding: it provides that street cred all of us look for in a face, establishes trust typically won through hard work and mileage, renders a company genuine and believable to consumers everywhere. And the results can be huge. Longterm brand preference aids in product stickiness, ensures customer satisfaction and opens the door to premium pricing. What could be better?
After a bunch of years in the agency business (and one agency startup), I tried my luck with technology and struck gold. Tech is an interesting beast. The founders put all their energy into making great product, then one day wake up and realize they need a reputation, need to look more sophisticated and enduring as a brand. That’s usually when I get the call.
When I’m not working, you can find me hiking some rugged path in Marin, usually with my two girls, or scuba diving in Monterey, CA. I’m also fairly musical and hell-bent on mastering a mean blues guitar.
